Are you one of those who find the whole Christmas hype, shopping, cooking just a pain in the neck, working even on the 24th, then fall headlong under the Christmas-tree on Christmas Eve? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you’ll probably roll your eyes when I say you should write Christmas cards sent by good old snail mail. However, you might get a glimpse of a new angle: I say you should send Christmas cards for your own well-being! I’m just about to tell you how.

It is pretty obvious why it’s great for the recipent, but whatever you might think, sending postal letters is a blessing for you too. Why? Here it is:

1. It is bliss browsing around Christmas cards. This time it’s not only stationery-geeks who’ll love what the shop offers, as the selection is practically endless. Unlike shopping for Christmas presents (when you have to try and read the mind of the person whom you surprise) the beauty of choosing a Christmas card is that you can buy whichever YOU like, the recipent will be more than happy anyway, to find a letter in his mailbox which is actually not a bill.

+tip: forget about the post office! Try and buy stamps in the stationery shop (ask previously whether they sell them) so you can avoid the queues and just drop your mail right into the letterbox.

2. You build yourself a new ritual. A lot of people who drop dead under the Christmas tree complain that they cannot prepare themselves for the holidays. Indeed, you can often hear in shopping centers in mid-december some weary customers saying ‘I haven’t got a Christmas mood at all’… Not those who send a card though! As you have to post your cards soon enough for them to arrive before Christmas Eve, you’ll start preparing for Christmas just on time.

3. You relax while you write. I have already written about the benefits of writing by hand but during the holiday madness a little offline peace is even more important. While you write letters, smell the ink and feel the texture of the paper you actually slow down. Stay mindful!

4. Sooner or later you get one yourself! If you’re just starting the letter-writing tradition then perhaps not this season but next year a little hand-adressed envelope will almost certainly pop-up in your mailbox. It is worth starting to use the postal service purely for this ridiculous amount of joy – not to mention that you can use them as decoration and of course boast about them to your friends.

5. Gran doesn’t read Facebook! Apart from some supergrannies most of the older generation will not see greetings you send via social media or email. You’ll probably meet Gran during the holidays of course, but if you want to make absolutely sure that she’ll bake your favourite cookie, then go and drop her a postcard!

6. It tells the world about your fantastic taste. It is pretty much a banality to say that sending a physical letter is more personal than an email, but what is it that lies behind this statement? A postcard beholds your handwriting and of course the fact that you’ve actually sent one speaks of your sensitive and kind personality, but the card you choose will tell everything about your sophisticated taste.
